Saint Nicholas

Today I want to talk about lovely Czech tradition of St. Nicholas which falls on the eve of December 6th – St. Nicholas Day. On the evening you can see groups of three (or more) people in costumes – St. Nicholas, Angel and Devil – walking the streets, stopping children and asking them if they were good or naughty in the past year. Almost all children say they were good (obviously), some of them recite a poem or sing a song. Angel and St. Nicholas have some sweet treats for them and naughty children would get only coal and potatoes from Devil or in the worst case scenario Devil will put them in his sack and take them to hell (it’s just a threat, it has to scare them a bit and force good behavior). Some parents hire these groups to come to their home, but the process is almost always the same and sweets are usually provided by parents. In some families put parents or other relatives sweet treats into a stocking and hide it somwhere at home (behind the window).

I remebmer that I usually had chocolate Advent calendar and exotic fruits behind my window. My mom was traditionalist in this thing. (In early times was common to give exotic fruits as St. Nicholas gifts because they were rare.)

This tradition is probably based on legend of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was Bishop of Myra in 4th century and later became one of the most venerated saints in the whole Christianity. Interesting fact about him is that he was never oficially declared a saint, he just became venerated by the broad masses of Christians. When he was alive, he was very popular and he had a reputation as a generous man who helped poor people.

My December To Do List

Hello December, it’s nice to see you again! Advent has begun on Sunday, official start of Christmas season. Whole city (Prague) is beautifully decorated with lights, city centre smells like mulled wine, sugar and cinnamon and even the Christmas tree was lit on Saturday in Old Town Square. I made list of ten things and activities I really want to do before holidays.

Perfect Gifts for Him and Her

I know, I know, is’s only November and most of this month (in Prague) was more like spring in full swing than upcoming winter. But stores are already full of decorations, garlands, wreths, lights, trees, snowglobes, candles, baubles and finally limited editions of candies. And I think it’s about time to put some gift lists together and start shopping. I decided to start earlier this year, because I want to enjoy Holiday atmosphere instead of rush, hunting gifts at the last minute and wrapping them few hours before Christmas dinner. Moreover, I have to admit that gift guides and lists of any kind are one of my favorite blog post types (for writing but for reading as well). Many people around me consider more difficult picking out presents for men, it can be pretty challenging to find the perfect gift for them. But thinking of their interests, hobbies, remembering things they like and browsing through websites could be fun! On the contrary this year was much more difficult for me to choose some decent and useful things for ladies.

Plaid Mood

My desire for plaid pattern starts usually with first fallen leaves and ends in deep winter… or in early spring. Of course that doesn’t mean I’m not wearing it the rest of the year, but in this season my need for plaid is much greater. I think it’s pretty versatile pattern, you can wear it in casual way and in more festive way as well. When you say plaid it definitely conjures pictures of school uniforms, cozy woolen blankets, long shawls and… Christmas.

I’m in a „Plaid Mood“ at the moment and here are few of my favorite plaid picks.

Hair Clip with Bow in Black Watch Modern / Double Medium Purse in Stewart Dress Modern / Her Flannel Shirt

Fine Wool Snood in Kilgour Modern / Barbour Dee Tartan Handbag

What about you? Are you in a “Plaid Mood”? Do you like plaid or it is not your cup of tea?

10 Things I Love about Fall

If I had to pick my favourite season it would be certainly fall. Many people complain about cold, darkness, wind, fog and constant rain. But for me there’s something magical and mysterious about fall. Foggy mornings and dark evenings, crispy air, pumpkins, amazing chrysanthemums, not to mention those beautiful colours of leaves. Maybe it’s voice of my dark self. Maybe it’s because I was born in the fall. However, some people are used to complain all year round, about all seasons. But I love every single one of them. At any season I can find at least 10 things I like. So here’s my list of things I love about fall.

Classy Gifts for Her

Hello there! Here I am with the second part of Christmas gift guide. Last time in Classy Gifts for Him I didn’t mention my opinion on cosmetics gifts. I can apply the same rule for both, ladies and gentlemen. When you don’t know their taste or particular product they like, it can be pretty tricky. Better to buy good chocolate, tea or something edible.

giftguideshe

1. Fair Isle Jumper – In section HM L.O.G.G. they have these colorful festive jumpers every year in several patterns.

2. Glass Bottle with Straw Cap – Healthy drinking with wide range of colors and sizes.

4. Organiser Diary Filofax Finsbury – I have this organiser third year and it’s still doing a very good job.

6. Monbento Original Bento – Bento box and Lifefactory bottle. = Perfect couple!

7. Flannel Pyjamas – Cute and cosy! What else to wish for?

8. KJP Bracelet Pearl Anchor Atlantic – As I said in Classy Gifts for Him, I’m very happy I discovered these bracelets in Czech eshop. In addition to leather ones they also have beautiful girly pearl style.

Classy Gifts for Him

It’s about time to put together Christmas gift lists and start buying. I’m pretty sure that many of you have them already purchased and now you are just thinking about some cute wrapping papers and labels. I have to admit, I really really like Christmas gift shopping, especially for my beloved ones. In case you still don’t know what to buy for your husband, boyfriend, brother, father or just friend, here are my picks for classy personal gifts. I tried to make them affordable and easy to get in my country, since I live here. But I think these brands are available in most countries.
